Plastic Bank labels Davines products 100% Certified Plastic Neutral

While it’s undeniable that thanks to its cheap, convenient and versatile nature, plastic has improved and made our lives more time-efficient, this has come at a tremendous cost to our planet and most specifically our oceans and its animal and plant-based wildlife. Sadly, it is estimated that one full truck of plastic enters the ocean every minute and if society continues embracing a toss and throw culture that by 2050,there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.

But, as you would expect from a BCorp company that has sustainability at its ethical core, Davines is on a crusade to change this situation. This latest initiative will ensure that plastic waste is not only stopped before it reaches the ocean, but that it is reused and recycled, furthering the ideal of a regenerative world.

In 2021, the Davines group launched its first partnership with Plastic Bank, preventing100 tonnes of plastic from being dispersed in the sea, contributing to collections on the coasts of Indonesia, the Philippines, and Brazil.  Following this initiative, the brand has now embraced one of the most challenging and ambitious commitments to date: for every product sold by the Davines Group either from its Davines haircare ranges or Comfort Zone skincare lines in 2022, an equal amount of ocean-bound plastic will be collected and removed from the environment through collaboration with Plastic Bank. As a result of this initiative, all Davines’ products are labelled 100% Certified Plastic Neutral by Plastic Bank.

The cornerstone of Plastic Bank’s work hinges on community-based initiatives that engage and financially recompense a local community, while improving the natural coastal landscape.

The Bank establishes ethical plastic collection branches within 50 kilometres of coastlines and waterways. The collection community members gather plastic waste directly from local beaches, riverbanks, neighbourhoods, and even households, enabling to stop ocean plastic directly at the source. These members then exchange plastic waste at local collection branches for above-market bonuses from Plastic Bank. In addition to an increase in income, collectors are also able to access social programs designed to provide basic family necessities such as groceries, cooking fuel, school tuition, health insurance, digital connectivity, cell phone minutes, smartphones, and digital tablets. By offering safe and traceable sources of income, the Bank empowers vulnerable communities with a path out of poverty.

This recycled plastic is reborn as Social Plastic® feedstock and used in the production of products and packaging – thus helping create new life for old plastic. To date, Plastic Bank’s collectors, branch owners, partners, contributors, and employees have stopped a staggering two billion single-use plastic bottles from entering the world’s oceans – the equivalent of 40 million kilograms of plastic waste! In essence, the Bank is on a mission to reduce our need for virgin plastic while creating lasting environmental, social, and economic impact.

While this agreement of Davines with the Plastic Bank will protect our planet, it is also destined to improve the lives of local collectors in Indonesia, Brazil and the Philippines, where recycling is challenging.

For Davines, sustainability is not a goal, but a journey - and being Certified Plastic Neutral by Plastic Bank confirms two of the brand’s idealistic and admirable core values, that is: care and innovation.
