Professional Beauty GCC Awards Judging Explained

The judging panel will be made up of key independent figures within the beauty, hair and spa industry and a representative from each of the sponsoring companies. 

A further round of judging will comprise of mystery customers and telephone calls and salon/spa visits will be made where appropriate. In the Business Director and Manager of the Year categories, finalists will be required to attend an interview. In some categories, finalists may be required to attend a practical 'hands on' judging session.

Judges are impartial and award points solely on the basis of the entry they look at, with no value attached to prior reputation or other issues. You can learn about the judging procedure for the relevant categories below:

First round judging

  • Judges are asked to read through all entries and score each one based on pre-defined criteria.
  • All scores are added and qualifying entries will be put through to a second round

Practical Demonstration

  • For Therapist, Make-up and the Nail Professional of the Year categories, finalists will be asked to demonstrate their ‘hands on’ skills in front of a panel of judges
  • For the Business Director, Salon Stylist and Manager of the Year categories, finalists will be required to attend an interview on: to be confirmed

Mystery visits

  • Where necessary, a mystery client will visit the finalists
  • The official visitor will complete a questionnaire and these points will be added to the previous scores 

The Detailed Judging Process

First-Round Judging – All Categories

Judges are asked to read through all entries and score each one based on pre-defined criteria. The points are added up and the highest scoring entries are shortlisted as finalists, making it through to the second round.

Second-Round Judging – Salon & Spa Categories

  • All entrants will receive an email detailing whether they have made the shortlist.
  • Mystery visitor – A ‘mystery’ client will visit all the finalists. The mystery client will book unannounced in the normal way and experience some treatments. Afterwards he/she will complete a questionnaire and report back to the judges. Entrants are expected to cover the cost of the mystery client’s treatments.
  • Judges conduct a conference call. The official visitor also attends and talks judges through the visits to each finalist.
  • Judges do not agree on a winner as a group but instead score independently using pre-defined criteria.
  • Judges submit their final scores to the Professional Beauty Awards organising team, who then total up all the scores from all the judges. The finalist with the highest collective score wins.

NOTE: Finalists will be responsible for providing treatments free of charge for the mystery visitor and in the case of the spa category an overnight stay

Second-Round Judging – Individual Practitioner Categories

  • All entrants will receive an email detailing whether they have made the shortlist.
  • Shortlisted finalists will be asked to attend a practical trade test in Dubai on a date to be confirmed 
  • Following this practical trade test, each finalist will be interviewed by the judges.
  • Judges do not agree on a winner as a group but instead score independently using pre-defined criteria.
  • Judges submit their final scores to the Professional Beauty Awards organising team, who then total up all the scores from all the judges. The finalist with the highest collective score wins

Second-Round Judging – Business Director and Manager of the Year

  • All entrants will receive an email detailing whether they have made the shortlist.
  • Shortlisted finalists will be asked to attend an interview in Dubai on a date to be confirmed.
  • Judges do not agree on a winner as a group but instead score independently using pre-defined criteria.
  • Judges submit their final scores to the Professional Beauty Awards organising team, who then total up all the scores from all the judges. The finalist with the highest collective score wins

Second-Round Judging – Bridal Hair Stylist & Colour Technician of the Year

  • All entrants will receive an email detailing whether they have made the shortlist.
  • No further action is required from the finalists
  • A Second round of scoring is contacted by the judges
  • Judges do not agree on a winner as a group but instead score independently using pre-defined criteria
  • Judges submit their final scores to the Professional Beauty Awards organising team, who then total up all the scores from all the judges. The finalist with the highest collective score wins

The organisers of the Professional Beauty Awards are aware that some of the information provided by you in the entry may be confidential and sensitive. With this in mind, we have systems in place to ensure non-disclousure of the judging process. All our judges sign a confidentiality agreement in advance.
