Hotel Conglomerates Commended for Reducing their Waste in 2019 – One Initiative at a Time

The global crackdown on plastic waste has seen many industries adapt their business practices in an effort to reduce their carbon footprint.

On 28th August 2019, the world’s biggest Hotel conglomerate, Marriott International, announced a global initiative to switch from single use toiletries (bath gels, shampoos and conditioners), to refillable larger bottles with a convenient pump design. This initiative is set to be fully implemented in most of their properties by December 2020. The initiative aims to reduce plastic waste and, when fully implemented, sets to prevent the use of about 500 million tiny bottles annually; that’s about 850 tons of plastic. That’s approximately a 30% annual reduction in their current amenity plastic waste.

Already, more than 20% of Marriott International’s properties have switched over to the new larger bottles with pump dispensers.

Arne Sorenson, President and Chief Executive Officer, expressed “how important we believe it is to continuously find ways to reduce our hotels’ environmental impact” - while doing their utmost to uphold the quality of service that people have come to expect from the chain.

Hyatt Hotels Corporation followed suit, announcing on 12th November 2019 similar initiatives to reduce plastic waste by making the switch. In addition, they also turned their attention to avoiding single-use water bottles, instead offering guests reusable glass bottles and in-room filtered water spouts.

These hotel conglomerates follow a long list of other properties who have also made similar switches and have similar initiatives. What changes will 2020 bring?
