How Hilton's Yas Island establishments are leading the way in sustainable hospitality
In the realm of sustainability within the hospitality sector, discussions often revolve around what needs to be done, how to execute those plans, and the associated costs. However, notable action in this regard is visibly demonstrated by Hilton, particularly under the leadership of Nader Halim at Yas Island properties in Abu Dhabi.
As the Cluster General Manager overseeing Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island, The WB™ Abu Dhabi, Curio Collection by Hilton, and DoubleTree by Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island Residences, Halim's efforts toward sustainability have already left a significant impact in just one year, aligning seamlessly with Hilton’s Travel with Purpose 2030 Goals.
Water Conservation:
Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island, a 545-key waterfront property on Yas Bay, has eliminated plastic water bottles, replacing them with strategically positioned water stations for guest bottle refills. These stations generate 390 liters of pure water daily, dispensing an impressive average of 48,000 liters each. Additionally, innovative water conservation measures, such as aerators on taps and special showerheads, have led to a remarkable 37 percent reduction in water consumption.
Local Sourcing and Food Waste Management:
The culinary team at Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island prioritizes sourcing produce within a 50-mile radius, reducing the hotel's carbon footprint. The Chef’s Garden initiative includes planting various fruit trees, contributing to a sustainable and visually appealing environment. Efforts to tackle food waste involve implementing Winnow’s AI system, resulting in a 20 percent reduction in food waste.
Solar Panels and Energy Efficiency:
Both properties under Halim's management utilize solar panels on their rooftops to power domestic water systems, saving up to 46,000 kWh per month and reducing CO2 emissions equivalent to approximately 250 cars. Energy consumption is further curtailed through an automated light control system and the use of 100 percent LED bulbs.
Meet with Purpose Program:
Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island offers the 'Meet with Purpose' program for MICE business, assisting clients in creating positive impacts on both attendee experiences and the communities they engage with. The Meeting Impact Calculator on Hilton's LightStay platform quantifies consumption data, allowing Hilton to offset carbon emissions associated with events.
Mangrove Planting and Community Engagement:
Through an ongoing partnership with Jubail Mangrove Park, the Yas Island cluster, including Halim and his team, actively engages in activities such as mangrove clean-ups, training sessions, and planting initiatives. By February 2023, 726 mangrove trees were planted at Jubail Mangrove Park.
These sustainability initiatives exemplify Hilton's commitment to responsible hospitality, aligning seamlessly with global sustainability goals.
