Strands of Hope: Join Abtaluna’s September hair donation campaign

Strands of Hope: Join Abtaluna’s September hair donation campaign

Updated on 02nd Sep 2025

Every September, Abtaluna rallies the UAE to a simple, beautiful act of solidarity: donating hair to make high-quality wigs for people impacted by cancer. Timed with International Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the campaign turns salon chairs into spaces of hope—one ponytail at a time.

Why hair, and why September?

Hair loss can be one of the most visible and emotionally difficult parts of cancer treatment. Real-hair wigs help restore a sense of self and confidence. September, marked worldwide as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, mobilises communities to learn, give, and stand with families navigating childhood cancer.

How the campaign works

Abtaluna partners with Friends of Cancer Patients (FOCP) in Sharjah through the Locks of Hope programme, ensuring every donated strand is transformed into a high-quality wig. During the campaign month, participating salons across Dubai and Abu Dhabi gift donors a free professional haircut as a thank-you for their contribution. In past editions, more than 40 salons joined the effort—proof that when the beauty industry comes together, impact scales fast.

What to donate (and what’s not accepted)

FOCP’s guidelines are straightforward and inclusive, with a focus on quality so each wig can truly last. FOCP

Key points include:

  • Minimum length: at least 28 to 30 cm (some length is lost in wig-making).
  • All natural colours accepted; dyed or chemically treated hair is fine if the colour is natural-looking.
  • Curly, wavy, straight, and permed hair are all welcome.

How to donate in a few easy steps

  1. Book directly with a participating salon for your complimentary haircut and donation.
  2. Drop your hair at the FOCP hair-donation kiosk in Sharjah or at any of the participating hair salons
  3. Apply for your FOCP certificate of appreciation after donating (FOCP form)

Where your hair goes

Hair collected through Abtaluna is delivered to FOCP’s Locks of Hope, which provides wigs to people who have undergone cancer treatment in the UAE. The programme focuses on dignity, confidence, and psychological support—because caring for the mind is part of caring for the body.

Community spirit and partners

Abtaluna’s past editions have been powered by a generous network of UAE salons—among them Pastels Salon, Tara Rose Salon, Sisters Beauty Lounge, and The Loft Fifth Avenue (across multiple locations)—alongside partners like Monarch Health Centers and Professional Beauty GCC. This collective effort has made it easier than ever to give.

In loving memory

Abtaluna dedicates the campaign to the late Lamar, a radiant 14-year-old who once donated her hair in Abu Dhabi before her own diagnosis. Her kindness continues to inspire donors across the country to cut, give, and honour every child’s courage. Abtaluna - Children Heroes
