Trend alert: Lower lashes are making a comeback
Lower lashes are back in vogue, sparking a new trend that has makeup enthusiasts and professionals alike rethinking their techniques. As TikTok debates whether mascara on the lower lashes should even be a thing, the beauty world is embracing experimental lash looks, both old and new. Here's how to achieve this trending look...
“I feel enhancements on the lower lash have been massively influenced by the iconic 60’s model Twiggy,” says Salon Systems educator Lisa Stone. The famous baby doll eye look has resurfaced over the years, allowing makeup artists to create stunning eye designs that trickle down to salon treatments.
The lower lash trend is also influencing and evolving the popular 'manga' and 'anime' lash trends.
Lower Lash Extensions
For clients seeking a long-lasting lower lash look, extensions might be the answer, though the technique differs from upper lashes.
“Always apply them after the top lash extensions, so you have more lash to help hold back the natural lashes,” advises Lashbase artist Alicia Reynolds. “B Curl lashes are my go-to for lower lashes, or split-tip classics as they tend to be more flexible, making them comfier for clients. My ultimate tip is to choose the correct lengths—stick to ½ lengths longer than the client's natural lashes, so they’re noticeable but not irritating.”
Valencia Koger, a viral US lash technician, emphasizes caution: “You have to ensure the extension is attached to the hair and not too close to the waterline for safety.”
Reynolds also suggests using boot tweezers for better placement and very fine lashes in 0.07 or 0.05 thickness for a subtle, pretty look that can replace mascara.
Lower Lash Lift
Lifting or sculpting the lower lashes is gaining popularity. “A lash lift on lower lashes is similar to lifting upper lashes, as the chemical change in the hair structure is the same,” says Stone. “However, timings may differ due to the texture of lower lashes, and the shields used are thinner and smaller to accommodate the lower lash lamination.”
Rather than lengthening, a lower lash lift changes the hair structure, fixing lashes in a neat, uniform position for a pretty, doll-like look that complements lifted upper lashes. Stone notes, “Eyes remain closed throughout the process, and care is needed when applying the chemicals. Avoid this procedure if the client has flickering eyes or can’t lie still for the treatment duration.”
Lower Lashes with Makeup
For those wanting to achieve bold, spiky lower lashes at home, mascara and a pair of tweezers can do the trick. This technique, not new but recently popular on TikTok, offers a dramatic effect that’s easily attainable.
In conclusion, whether through extensions, lifts, or makeup, lower lashes are making a stylish return. With the right techniques and products, professionals and enthusiasts can embrace this trend and create eye-catching looks that stand out.
